Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Miami FL 311 PM EDT Sun Jun 12 2022

SHORT TERM (Rest of Today through Monday).

A transition day from the previously very wet week to a little drier less overall coverage week ahead. Winds have become more southerly and southeasterly as ridging begins to build across the area. A little bit of drier air has begun to filter in as well. As the change in flow occurs it will shift the bulk of the activity away from the east coast. Isolated to scattered showers and storms this afternoon and evening with most of that activity occurring across northern and interior portions of the region. Heavy rainfall and lightning will be main concerns with strongest storms. Overall coverage will be lower than the previous days across the region.

As we move into Monday, a ridge in the mid-levels as well as high pressure building at the surface will change the overall flow pattern from last week. Southeasterly winds across the region will bring in a little drier airmass as well as some SAL across the area. This will help suppress overall coverage of showers and thunderstorms across the area Monday. However, isolated showers and storms will still be possible with diurnal heating and as the seabreezes advance inland with highest chance of precip over the interior.

High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s across much of the area, with a few areas approaching triple digit heat indices.

LONG TERM (Monday Night through Sunday).

A large deep layer ridge of high pressure will settle into the Southeastern portion of the country for most of the week. This will bring a light to moderate southeasterly wind flow to South Florida during this time frame. At the same time, a Saharan Air Layer will will remain over the region through the middle of the week. This could help to decrease overall coverage of showers and thunderstorms each afternoon and evening. However, there will be enough lower level moisture to still support a chance of shower and thunderstorm activity each afternoon and evening. Convection will be sea breeze driven throughout the week with the highest chances of showers and thunderstorms remaining over the interior and western locations. With less overall coverage of showers and thunderstorms, this will allow for high temperatures to remain very warm as they will rise to around 90 across the east coast metro areas and into the lower to mid 90s across interior sections of Southwestern Florida.

Moving into the upcoming weekend, the latest model guidance is showing a mid level trough digging down across the eastern seaboard and into the Florida Peninsula. At the surface, a frontal boundary stalls out well to the north across Northern Florida and the Gulf Coast states. This will help to shift the steering flow around to the south southwest increasing the amount of moisture in the region. This in turn has the potential to gradually increase the chances of showers and thunderstorms across South Florida during this time frame. Uncertainty remains high in this part of the forecast as it is towards the end of the forecast period and model differences remain in timing and intensity of the mid level trough moving southward. The latest forecast represents a blend of the forecast models and increases the chances of showers and thunderstorms for next weekend. This will continue to be monitored as the week progresses.

AVIATION(18Z TAFS).

VFR prevails at all terminals with SSE winds around 10kt for the afternoon hours. Except KAPF, southwesterly flow. Scattered showers and storms this afternoon. Highest rain chances will be northern portions of the region. Periods of

MVFR

/IFR cigs/vis may accompany any heavy shower/storm that forms around the terminals. L/V winds overnight.

MARINE.

Generally benign boating conditions into next week with overall light winds. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible each day, locally elevated winds and seas are possible within or near any convection.
